Soft Top Surfboard
The soft surfboard or soft top surfboard is exactly what it says, a soft surf board. Its a bit like a boogie board only shaped like a regular surfboard.
If you are just learning how to surf and are a absolute beginner this type of board could be a great choice for you, or if you just surf once in a blue moon, or you have small kids these boards are the go.
If your goal is to surf on a regular basis then eventually you will want to get yourself a traditional board so your surfing can progress.
WHY A SOFT SURF BOARD?
They are as about as safe of surfboard you can get.
Traditional boards are hard and the fins are sharp, so if you get hit in the head or the fins get a hold of you, you could be in for a nasty little gash.
The soft top surfboard wont do nearly as much harm and the fins are as sharp and hard either, which keeps you and other surfers/swimmers around you safer as well.
Soft surfboards are pretty indestructible so it makes it ideal for the beginner surfer and kids, they can be banged around dropped on the ground, stomped on and still be surfed. Thats not to say that you cant break these or put holes in them its just not as easy compared to a fiberglass board.
These boards float really well which is great for the beginner surfer. The extra flotation helps out by being easier to paddle and makes them more stable.
Price & Selection
A soft top surfboard wont cost as much as a new traditional board and the resell value on these things are pretty good as well.
Since these boards hold up well you can just keep it in your quiver and whenever you want to teach someone how to surf you will have a board for them or re-sell it to another beginner surfer for them to learn how to surf.
They also come in a bunch of different sizes which is pretty cool. From a 4 foot shortboard outline all the way up to a 10 foot longboard outline.
If you are an experienced surfer and live in an area that has black ball beaches you know it can be pretty frustrating when the waves are good but you can’t surf them due to swimmers and boogie boarders. Soft top boards can be a good black ball beater, while they wont perform as well as your regular board at least you can surf instead of bodysurf (body surfing is loads of fun and a great way to ride waves, but were talking about surfing here) or sit on the beach and watch the waves roll in with know one on them.
All in all soft tops can be a good alternative to a regular surfboard, like we said- if you just surf every once in awhile or want to get your kids a beginner surfboard than these are a good option, if you are looking to get more into surfing you will want to get on to a traditional board.
