We got the idea to make a batch of ginger beer awhile back, mainly because we had some friends do it and it was pretty tasty and seemed pretty easy to make.
This is a non alcoholic version- although a tiny bit will be produced less than >1%
It really is quite easy just follow these basic instructions and you’ll have a great alternative to store bought sodas and ginger ales.
- A 2 Liter Plastic Bottle **its important to use a plastic bottle and not glass**
- Strainer-To strain the ginger pulp.
- Grater-For the ginger
- Fresh Ginger Root
- 2 Fresh Lemons
- 1/8 tbsp. Yeast (champagne yeast, if you can get it, other wise bakers yeast)
- 1 Cup Granulated Sugar
Combine 1 cup of sugar and roughly 4 tablespoons of freshly grated ginger ( you can add more or less-up to you) with a cup of water into a medium sauce pan.
Bring to a rolling boil and remove from heat.
Let the mixture steep for a ½ hour to an hour.
Add 1/8th to 1/4 tsp. of active dry yeast into the 2 liter plastic bottle. Use the Funnel to pour your mixture of sugar /ginger and water into plastic bottle- This is where you can strain the bits and pieces of ginger if you want.
Add the juice of 1- 2 lemons or limes into the plastic bottle as well.
Now fill up the rest of the bottle with a water, screw lid back on and give a good shake.
Now put somewhere in a dark ,warm place- pantry or cabinet of some sort- Let sit for 24-48 hours.
The Ginger Beer is ready when the plastic bottle is hard to the touch. Place into refrigerator, this slows down the yeast from fermenting further.
Pour into a glass with some ice and enjoy.
Super simple and tasty.
Again-Its important to use a plastic bottle and to release the pressure after you have put into refrigerator every couple days or so.
