How To Make Surfboard Wax
Want to know how to make surfboard wax?
What for you might ask? especially since you can get it for a dollar a bar, its three dollars where I live, but still its hardly worth the hassle right? right.
But why not have a go at it at least once. DIY will make you more knowledgeable and that much more of a complete surfer.
There are a few websites out there offering how to make a chemical based formula surfboard wax.
I guess they mean well, but seriously where are you supposed to get some of those ingredients like Vistanex polyisobutylenes, I think Exxon mobile might sell it or something like that.
Making an organic based surf wax is so much easier.
I am not knocking the petroleum based surfwax, I use it all the time.
But it cant hurt to make an organic wax and if it works just as well then that’s one less part of surfing relying on petroleum.
There are only two ingredients you need to make a warm water organic surf wax
• Coconut Oil
That’s it. Add tree resin if you want a cold water temp wax. ( tree resin is a little tricky to get but you can buy it in a granulated form or tap a tree)
- 4 parts Beeswax to 1 part coconut oil – warm water
- 4 parts Beeswax to 1 part Coconut Oil and 1 part Tree Sap-Resin – cold water.
With each recipe you might want to mess around with portions, maybe 3 to 1 to 2 or 4 to 2 to 2 etc…….
Melt the ingredients in a double boiler and stir constantly, when it is all liquefied pour into a mold- plastic or metal. Wait for it to harden up/cool down and there you go. This is a very basic recipe there are certainly more complicated organic recipes out there but this should do you allright just to have a go at it.
My Experience With The Homemade Surf Wax
The first time I used it, wax felt a little slippery, second go out applied more wax and it was sticky, really stoked on how good it worked. Maybe it just needed that first base coat.
The wax is fairly soft we might have to tweak the ratio to harden it up a bit?? Don’t know if that will make a difference or not. Either way it works.
This was in warm water so not sure how cold water recipe will work. But give it go, something to do when the swell is down.
All these ingredients can be bought in store, no need to make the coconut oil or tap a tree for resin. Just search around the internet and you will find these ingredients no prob, even the tree sap can be gotten of the web.
About 10 dollars for a over a kilo of Bees Wax- we only used a tiny bit, got loads left
1 dollar for the two coconuts used to make the oil, still have oil left over for the next batch.
